Application tips: To expand your color palette, you can create custom shades by mixing it with other glazes at a 1 to 4 ratio. Layering: Different colors of Beads glazes can be layered together. Before applying the next layer, allow the first one to set slightly until it loses its sheen. Apply layers in opposite directions – for example, the first vertically and the second horizontally. The layer applied first will be the most prominent. It is recommended to apply 1 – 2 layers of each color, but a greater amount will produce an even more pronounced beaded texture. Using with underglazes and slips: When applied over underglazes or stoneware slips, this glaze retains its volume and relief. For best results, it is recommended to fire the underglaze or slip to a bisque temperature (Cone 04 / 1060°C ) before applying Beads-this will ensure better adhesion. Layering with stoneware glazes: If Beads is used underneath or on top of other glazes, the texture may flatten out during firing. Although the dimensionality is lost, this technique still creates interesting, colorful, and smooth layering effects. Firing temperature: Beads features a wide firing range from Cone 5 to Cone 10 (1186°C -1285°C ) in both oxidation and reduction atmospheres. At higher temperatures, the glaze may flow more and soften, and the surface texture can change. Since results depend on firing conditions and layering, testing is highly recommended. Food safety: Due to its rough surface texture, “Beads” glaze is not recommended for the interior of dinnerware (food-contact surfaces). However, it can be used on the exterior of vessels, below the lip line.
