Tips:
Color Palette: To expand your color palette, you can create your own custom shades by mixing this glaze with other glazes at a 1:4 ratio.
Layering: Different colors of Beads glazes can be layered over one another. Allow the first coat to set until it loses its sheen before applying the next layer. Apply coats in alternating directions (e.g., the first coat vertically, the second horizontally). The layer applied first will be the most prominent. It is recommended to apply 1-2 coats of each color, though adding more coats will create an even more pronounced beaded texture.
Using with Underglazes and Slips: When applied over underglazes or stoneware slips, this glaze retains its volumetric, high-relief texture. For best results, it is recommended to bisque fire the underglaze or slip first (Cone 04 / 1060°C) before applying “Beads” – this ensures optimal adhesion.
Layering with Stoneware Glazes: If “Beads” is used underneath or on top of other glazes, the texture may flatten during firing. Although the 3D volume is lost, this technique still creates interesting, colorful, and smooth layering effects.
Firing Temperature: “Beads” features a broad firing range from Cone 5 to Cone 10 (1186°C–1285°C), performing well in both oxidation and reduction atmospheres. At higher temperatures, the glaze may flow and soften more, which can alter the surface texture. Because results vary based on firing conditions and layering, testing is recommended prior to final application.
Food Safety: Due to its textured, rough surface finish, “Beads” glaze is not recommended for food-contact surfaces (such as the interior of dinnerware). However, it can be safely used to decorate the exterior of functional pieces below the lip contact area.
